Up, Up and Away

Saturday, October 30, 2010.

Jeff and I popped up dragged ourselves out of bed early this morning to leave the house by 6:45am to go to the airport.

Note to self:
1. Don't put away a suitcase from previous trip with broken zipper until it has been repaired.
2. Check all zippers on suitcases the night before you are scheduled to leave on a trip.

Are you kidding me? The broken suitcase zipper was discovered as we headed out the door. After a quick switcharoo with the suitcases, we backed out of the driveway right on time at 7:10am (ahem!). We sat two rows in front of a crying toddler and one row behind a guy who wouldn't turn off his cell phone at the insistence of several flight attendants which made for several intense conversations with the idiot.

We got to Atlanta about noon and headed to our first stop, Stone Mountain. We had lunch outside at the Golf Club overlooking a lake and the weather was 72 degrees with clear blue skies. I had a most interesting and delicious sandwich: grilled salmon BLT on toasted sourdough bread.

We ate outside the white building on the right, right on the water...

Carvings on the side of the mountain are of Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis...

We saw all the attractions at Stone Mountain which is like a smaller version of Silver Dollar City in Branson. One of our favorite things was riding the train around the mountain. I can't imagine it being prettier any other time of year. I mean the afternoon sun was streaming through the trees and lighting them up like a Tiffany lamp in shades of greens and yellows with red highlights.

Our other favorite thing was going to the top of the mountain in the sky lift. Well, being confined in the gondola with three dozen people wasn't so good, but the view from the top was worth the ride. And may I commend myself on getting shoes with good tread because the top of that rock was lumpy and bumpy and full of craters. And while we're on the subject of my new hiking shoes, I have to mention that they blended perfectly with the rock beneath my feet which was a pretty color of greenish-brownish gray with blue speckles.

Me and my Baggalinni...

Perfectly matched...

Jeff is in his element studying aerial photos of Stone Mountain in the gift shop...

Early in the evening, people were pouring into the park with blankets and picnics and staking out spots for the weekly laser show. But when we found it wasn't to start for two more hours we decided we could live without it and went back to the Golf Club for dinner and some college football. We sat in the lounge area with a game on one screen and could see through the bar into the pool table area where there was a different game playing on another TV. We sat by a fire and ate salad and the best crab bisque ever.

Since our hotel was across from the park, we stopped in our room after dinner to grab a jacket and we walked over to see the end of the laser show which just might have involved fireworks and patriotic music...squeal. We ended the day by piling up in bed watching more football. I do believe this was the evening that Baylor beat UT.
Sic 'em.
