Saturday 6/11/11
We took a hotel shuttle to the airport Saturday morning where we rented a car for the remainder of our trip. I think we learned our lesson several years ago about driving in Boston, so we decided to get the rental car for just our Maine adventure. We headed north in cool, rainy weather with M driving and J navigating.
Our first stop was Portsmouth, NH. We had planned to check out their quaint little downtown area, and when we got there it was set up for a wonderful Market Days affair. In the rain:( This was a really cute town filled with good shops and restaurants, and the additional several dozen tent shops and food booths made for a great Market Days. In the rain and cold:( But these people came out in droves, many in shorts and spaghetti strap tops. Jeff noted that these are hearty folks.
We had lunch at the most fun place, The Friendly Toast, which was decorated with funky nostalgic items from the 40s, 50s and 60s. We shared pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast and the most amazing "homefries" which were sliced red potatoes and caramelized onions. Oh goodness, this was good food.
We enjoyed looking at some of the cute stores downtown, but have to admit we weren't as hearty as most of the folks there because we were not liking the cold and the wet. But we really enjoyed a kitchen/wine shop and Jeff thought this apron was the funniest thing ever.
Then we were off to Maine. We drove through really pretty countryside and along the sides of the road were scads of these pretty flowers. I was told they are wildflowers called lupines.
The azaleas here are so huge they come up to the second story of the houses. The rain dried up but it was very chilly with temps in the low 50s. The views were really gorgeous the farther we went.
We arrived at our B&B, Inn on the River, in The Forks, Maine, around dinnertime. This is a comfortable, rustic place on a bluff overlooking the Kennebec River. They have a bar and little restaurant in the back and it was filled with river rafters who were swapping tales of their river adventures that day...in the rain. Very hearty folks!

We ate dinner at the inn.
Jeff had duck and I had crab cakes and it was all very good.

We look forward to exploring the rivers and woods of this remote area of Maine over the next couple of days...hopefully, not in the rain.
